Tips on how to install Solar Panel Proofing

Installing solar panel proofing to keep pigeons at bay is a practical project, and with the right tools, it can be done fairly easily. Here are some steps to guide you through the installation process:

1. Preparing the Area

  • Clean the area under the solar panels: Before installing any proofing materials, thoroughly clean the underside of the solar panels. Pigeons tend to leave droppings and debris, which can attract them back. Use a broom, vacuum, or soft brush to remove any nesting materials and waste.
  • Inspect for existing damage: While cleaning, check for any existing damage to the panels or roof that pigeons might have caused.

2. Installing Bird Mesh or Netting

  • Materials: Bird mesh or netting can be purchased online. Choose a UV-resistant mesh, as it will last longer outdoors. You will also need zip ties, clips, or specialized solar panel clips

Steps:

  • Measure the space: Measure the perimeter of your solar panels to determine how much mesh or netting you’ll need.
  • Cut the mesh: If needed, cut the bird mesh to fit around the edges of the panels. Leave some extra material to ensure full coverage.
  • Attach the mesh: Start by attaching the mesh or netting to the corners of the solar panels, securing it with clips or zip ties. Make sure the mesh is tightly secured but not pulling too hard, as you don’t want to damage the solar panels.
  • Secure the edges: Attach the mesh or netting along the entire perimeter, making sure to tuck it in well so pigeons can’t squeeze underneath.

4. Installing Specific Spikes for Solar Panels

  • Materials : Solarguard spikes come in various sizes for the height of panel from the tiled roof, sizes 130mm or 160mm.
  • Cleaning Panels: Panels must be cleaned with an alcohol based product before using adhesive.
  • Measure the space: Measure the perimeter of your solar panels to determine how much Solarguard you will require. They come in 25m packs and can add extras individually.
  • Attach: The Solarguard is attached by using adhesive or solar speed clips will need to check size of side profile for clips, either 30mm or 35mm.
  • Be gentle with the panels: Always be careful not to damage the solar panels during installation. Avoid drilling directly into the panels.
  • Opt for quality materials: Invest in high-quality bird-proofing materials, especially mesh, clips, and spikes. Poor-quality materials can break down quickly in harsh weather.
  • Consider professional help: If you’re unsure about how to install the proofing or if you have a particularly high or complex roof, hiring a professional might be a good option.
